Fibre-Optic Patch Leads
A fibre-optic patch lead (or fibre patch cord) is a short, flexible fibre optic cable used to link optical devices together. It connects network hardware, such as servers, switches, and routers, to a patch panel or directly to an outlet.
These leads act as essential, customizable “jumpers” in data centres, server rooms, and telecommunications networks, providing a few key features:
- Fast Connections: Both ends are terminated with optical connectors (e.g., LC, SC, or ST), allowing for quick plugging and unplugging.
- High-Speed Transmission: Instead of copper, they use thin strands of glass to transmit data using light, offering superior bandwidth, reliability, and speed.
- Varieties: They come in different cable modes—Single-mode (usually yellow) for long-distance, high-capacity data and Multimode (often orange, aqua, or magenta) for shorter, high-speed runs.
