An access control exit device is a device used to let people safely and legally exit a secured door that is controlled by an access control system.

It works together with electric locks, card readers, intercoms, or biometric systems to release the door from the inside.

Common types include:

Exit Button

A push button that unlocks the door when pressed.

Examples:

  • “PRESS TO EXIT” button
  • Touchless infrared exit button

Exit Motion Sensor (REX Sensor)

A motion detector that automatically unlocks the door when someone approaches from inside.

Often called:

  • REX = Request to Exit

Commonly used in offices and commercial buildings.

Panic Bar / Crash Bar

A horizontal bar on emergency exit doors. Pressing the bar unlocks and opens the door quickly during emergencies.

Usually required by fire and building safety codes.

Emergency Door Release (Break Glass Unit)

A safety device that immediately cuts power to a magnetic lock during emergencies.

Common near maglock doors.
