An RFID reader (Radio Frequency Identification) is an Access Control security device that wirelessly authenticates credentials—like key cards or fobs—to grant or deny entry into a secure area. It instantly scans the user’s data and triggers the door lock.
How It Works
- Power & Signal: The reader emits a constant electromagnetic field. When an RFID credential (fob or card) enters this field, its internal microchip is powered on and transmits a unique identification code back to the reader.
- Verification: The reader relays this data to a centralized access control panel. The system cross-references the code against a database of authorized users and permissions.
- Access: If the credentials are valid, the system unlocks the door; if not, access is denied (often accompanied by an audible beep or flash).
Common Types
- Low-Frequency (125 kHz): Older but very common; generally used for simple, standard door access.
- High-Frequency (13.56 MHz): More advanced options (such as MIFARE or DESFire) offering higher encryption, making them harder to duplicate.
- Dual-Frequency: Readers capable of reading both frequency types to support a facility transitioning from older to newer systems.
- Ultra-High-Frequency (UHF) (860MHz ~ 960MHz): a long-range RFID technology that operates between 860 and 960 MHz. It allows readers to automatically identify credentials and grant entry from distances of 10 to 50 feet (3 to 15 meters), enabling hands-free access.
Key Benefits
- Touchless Convenience: Users simply tap or wave their card/fob near the reader to unlock a door, without needing a physical key.
- Audit Trails: The system logs exact timestamps of who entered, which is highly useful for tracking attendance and investigating security breaches.
- Easy Revocation: If a key card is lost or an employee leaves, their access rights can be instantly deactivated in the software, eliminating the need to change physical locks.
