EM Prox refers to EM Proximity technology, a widely used type of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system primarily used for secure physical access control, time attendance tracking, and identification.
How it Works
- Frequency: EM proximity devices operate on a low-frequency radio band of 125 kHz.
- Contactless: Cards, key fobs, or wristbands do not require physical contact or line-of-sight. When waved near an EM Proximity Reader, the card extracts power from the reader’s electromagnetic field and transmits its programmed ID number in binary form.
- Validation: The reader transmits this ID to a centralized access system. If the ID is recognized and approved, the door or gate is unlocked.
Key Characteristics
- Passive Design: EM Prox cards and tags require no batteries or maintenance.
- Common Hardware: The underlying EM protocol (such as the EM4100/EM4102 chipsets) is widely compatible across many security brands.
- Security Limitations: Because the ID number is transmitted “in the clear” without complex encryption, traditional 125-kHz proximity systems are susceptible to eavesdropping or cloning by unauthorized devices. As a result, many modern systems pair it with secure biometrics or upgrade to Bluetooth/Smart card alternatives.
