The Em-Rex® (Emergency Exit Device) is a resettable emergency door release unit typically used in access control and security systems to safely override electronic door locks (like magnetic locks) during an emergency.
Key Features and Specifications
- No Broken Glass: Unlike traditional break-glass units, the Em-Rex® is fully resettable using a supplied tool, which saves on replacement costs after accidental or test activations.
- Visual & Audible Signals: It provides on-board sounders (piezo buzzers) and visual confirmation of activation. Smart versions (like the Trojan Smart Em Rex) feature LED backlighting for visibility in low-light emergencies.
- Lock Control & Monitoring: The device has two sets of outputs: one to cut power to the door lock and another to send a monitoring signal to the access control system.
- Passive Design: As a passive device, it does not rely on complex electronics that could fail during critical situations.
- Specifications: Fits a single-gang electrical flush box, requires 9 to 16Vdc (if using the onboard sounder), and features contacts rated at 1 Amp, 30Vdc. It complies with RoHS, CE, C-Tick, and BS 5839 Pt 2 standards for “Break-Glass Panels”.
How It Works
During an emergency, a user lifts the protective cover and presses the release button. This deliberate mechanical action immediately breaks the circuit to the door’s magnetic lock, allowing the door to open freely. The unit can be reset after the emergency passes using the included reset key.
Typical Components
- Em Rex® Unit: The primary exit device.
- Em-Cover: A polycarbonate protective cover often placed over the unit to prevent accidental operation, which can also be wired to trigger an alarm or send a monitoring signal when lifted.
