The primary difference between the HID Signo 20 Standard Profile and the Smart Profile lies in their support for 125 kHz Low-Frequency (LF) proximity cards. Standard Profile readers read both legacy and modern cards, while Smart Profile readers are engineered for sites that only utilize High-Frequency (HF) and Mobile credentials.

Key Differences

Feature Standard Profile (e.g., 00/01 configuration) Smart Profile (e.g., 02 configuration)
Low-Frequency (LF) Support Yes (Supports HID Prox, Indala, EM Prox) ❌ No
High-Frequency (HF) Support Yes (Seos, iCLASS, DESFire, MIFARE) Yes (Seos, iCLASS, DESFire, MIFARE)
Mobile Credentials Yes (NFC, Bluetooth, Apple Wallet) Yes (NFC, Bluetooth, Apple Wallet)
Use Case Ideal for sites migrating from legacy 125 kHz proximity badges to newer tech. Ideal for brand-new or “future-proofed” sites that do not use old proximity cards.

Why choose one over the other?

  • Standard Profile: Gives you maximum compatibility and is the safest bet for legacy environments, though it allows older, less secure 125 kHz credentials.
  • Smart Profile: Forces a complete transition to high-security credentials. By completely disabling the low-frequency hardware component, it secures the facility against the use of easily cloned proximity cards.

You can manage, update, and toggle specific credential technologies natively via the HID Reader Manager app.
