Video Intercoms

An intercom (short for intercommunication system) is a device or system that lets people talk to each other within a building or between entry points without using a phone network.

An intercom typically has:

• Outdoor unit (door station) – at the entrance (with mic, speaker, often camera)
• Indoor unit (monitor or handset) – inside the building
• Communication link – wired or network-based

You press a button at the door → it rings inside → someone answers → you can talk (and often unlock the door remotely).

Common types of intercom systems

1. Audio intercom

• Voice only
• Simple and low cost
• Used in older apartments or offices

2. Video intercom

• Adds a camera and screen
• Lets you see who is at the door
• Common in homes and modern buildings

3. IP (network) intercom

• Works over Ethernet/Wi-Fi
• Can connect to mobile apps
• Often integrates with access control and smart home systems

4. Wireless intercom

• Uses radio/Wi-Fi instead of cables
• Easier to install but may have range limits
